Movie Week :)

This week is “Movie Week”!!  It is, for some, the favorite week. I try to pick out a movie that most kids have not seen.  It needs to be age appropriate and relevant to our discussion and … oh yes, entertaining.  This year in our music history segment I am trying to highlight a place and then associate it with composers who lived there.  I am hoping it will be less dry than just saying, “Handel was born in Germany but lived in England”.  So how does this relate to Movie Week?

This week’s movie is “Hans Christian Andersen” starring Danny Kaye.  Do you remember it? I do.  As a child, it made quite an impression on me.  It takes place in Denmark – well not actually because it probably takes place on a studio set in LA – but it is supposed to look like Denmark.  I am trying to get the students to look at the scenery: the babbling brooks, the cobblestone streets next to the waterways, the scene where they head out on the open sea to Copenhagen.  Then I am planning to play some music by composers who lived nearby.  My dream is that they see what scenery inspired these composers.  I will tell you truly that I never know if my grand plans work, but worst case scenario they see a fun movie and hear pleasant music.  Best case, they make a connection and when I pull out a piece for them to play and it is by one of those composers, they remember.  We are only watching the first 5 tracks as the story gets a little slow and we see a lot less scenery so it does not suit my purpose.

As a side note, if you want to see scenes from this movies, pull it up on YouTube.  It is a difficult movie to find so that is your best bet.  The music is by Frank Loesser who also wrote “Guys and Dolls”, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and a few others.  Danny Kaye does a great job and I think you will recognize many of the songs  especially “The Inchworm”.  Have Fun!!

Happy October

Here we are well into October. I am about to delve into our first Music History segment.  This year it will revolve around Geography:  what composers lived where and what inspired them to write. More info to follow.

Just a reminder, as the days get shorter and we have our daylight savings time change, students can easily lose their practice routine. An extra reminder and some positive reinforcement from Mom and Dad will really go a long way.

Summer Piano Lessons

Summer is right around the corner and I know schedules are tricky to arrange.  If you  would like to take some lessons this summer, please contact me. We can set up a regular day and time or simply arrange times as we go along – every week, every 2 weeks, or just a few lessons during the summer.  Summer can be a wonderful time for kids to relax and enjoy playing some of their favorite pieces. A few summer lessons will give direction.
Lessons or no lessons, hope your summer is relaxing and fun.

It is Recital Time

As many of you know, here at the Old Barn Music School we keep our recitals very low- key.  If you want to know why, click on the “In My Opinion” tab and then on “Recitals”.

Here are the logistics for our upcoming concert:

Girls’ Concert is Tuesday, June 11th, 3:30-5:00

Boys’ Concert is Wednesday, June 12th, 3:30-5:00

No parents please – this is a kid and teacher concert only.

If you feel you are missing out, here is a suggestion.  Have a concert at home.  You can make it fancy: dress up, serve tea and cookies, invite family, friends and neighbors.  This concert will be extremely convenient as it will be exactly the length you had hoped and will take place exactly when you need it to fit into your calendar.

Spring Fever ??

Sometimes when the weather gets nice out and the days get longer, it is tricky to get your child to practice the piano. Here are some ideas that might help.
1. Schedule practicing for a time just after your student has had a chance to do a more physical activity.
2. It might be time to add a little extra positive comments … let him or her know which are your favorite songs and have them play those again for you.
3. We are getting ready to have our “concert day”. Maybe you can talk about what song will be played and do a little pre-concert playing or end each practice session working on that song.

Movie Day – Jungle Book

We just had “Movie Day”. The feature presentation was Jungle Book. Lots of the students had never seen this classic.  It is a fun one to watch at home with the family.  Of course, we pointed out the music.  What you might want to notice??  Brass instruments and lots of them.  There are plenty of Jazz and Big Band Style instruments.  You can’t miss Louis Armstrong, “King Louis” and his trumpet …  AND … you might want to notice the fact that most of the typical sound effects are replaced with music.  It is very entertaining and rated “G” 🙂
